Nicaragua – Days 9 & 10: San Juan Del Sur

Day 9 of our trip to Nicaragua was Beach Day! We went to Playa Madera, a surfer’s paradise! The waves were huge, and extremely powerful.  It was also my first time in the pacific ocean, which was pretty cool. And of course the food and drinks were amazing! We left our camera’s behind this day, to  experience the day and just have fun, so unfortunately I have no photos to share.

On Day 10, our last day in San Juan Del Sur, we visited the San Juan Del Sur (SJDS) library.

Proyecto Mi Chante La Casona

Proyecto Mi Chante is an organization in Leon that offers a variety of health and education initiatives. It started as a community house that was used by police officers to do social work with local boys that were causing trouble. What once was known as one of the most dangerous areas of Leon is now considered one of the safest, thanks to this organization.

Las Tias – Mothers Changing Lives

Las Tias began in the street market of Leon, over 20 years ago. At that time, the mothers who worked in those markets weren’t able to leave their children home alone during the day while they worked, so they would bring them along to the market. However, these children, growing up out in the streets, ended up getting into a lot of mischief – particularly, stealing food from other vendors. The mothers decided they had to put a stop to this, and when they asked their children why they were stealing, their answer was that they were hungry. So the mothers came together and created a safe space at one end of the market where they provided these children with free food. This was the beginning of Las Tias. Since then, they’ve grown into an organization which runs in a small building in Leon and provides so many opportunities to the children and youth of the city.

Nicaragua Day 5 – NGO’s of Leon

On Day 5 of our trip, we visited not one, not two, but three NGOs! This was definitely the most impactful day of my time in this beautiful country. It was a day filled with emotion, and a day I’ll never forget. At the end of our day we went to dinner as a group, and I remember feeling a sense of guilt for how privileged we were, being able to travel and eat and even be photographers.

Nicaragua Day 4 – Leon

On Day 4 of our trip, we were on our way to Leon.

Leon is the second largest city of Nicaragua, and has the most churches per capita in Nicaragua. It’s where the revolution started – pro sandinista. The city used to be all cobblestone roads, and although many have been replaced with roads, there are still some sections that are trying to be maintained.

Portraits from an Island

On Day 3 of my trip to Nicaragua with Photographers Without Borders, we had the opportunity to visit a local indigenous community through Ramon and No Rush Tours.

This impoverished indigenous community lives on an island in Lake Nicaragua, one of many small islands forming the Islets of Granada. A portion of the profits raised through No Rush Tours goes towards helping this community by providing them with food, clothes, school supplies, and more.
